Randall Enderle (Pop) Ashbrook, 76 formally of Cynthiana, KY and Burnside, KY died April 7, 2008 at the VA Medical Center. He was proceeded in death by his parents Clifford A. and Lou (Hamilton) Ashbrook; a brother Aaron Ashbrook; two sisters, Helen Ashbrook and Lillian (Ashbrook) Barnes; two nephews, Russell and Joe Ashbrook.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Virginia Louise (Hatterick) Ashbrook, a son David Ashbrook (Haverhill, MA), two daughters, Luanne (Mike) Wilson (Lexington) and Amy (Charlie) Woodrum (Nicholasville, KY).
He worked briefly for the L&N Railroad after graduating from the Berry Kentucky High School. He then enlisted in the Air Force and served his country as a cryptographer during the Korean War. After returning from Korea, he worked for Life of Georgia Insurance Co. where his gift of "gab" and "never met a stranger" persona rose him through the ranks and he traveled throughout the southern states until he was promoted manager of the Richmond, VA Home office. In 1971, disillusioned by "big" city life, he took early retirement and brought his family back to Cynthiana. He and his wife started Ashbrook Real Estate. In 1973, they became co-owners of the Colonial Funeral Home. In 1987, he and his wife decided to retire and move to Lake Cumberland (Burnside) but retirement was short lived as Randall took advantage of the real estate boom going on in the area and once again established Ashbrook Real Estate, boat storages, and townhouses. In 2001, due to declining health he and his wife moved to Lexington to be closer to family.
Besides his wife and children, he is survived by six grandsons, Clifford and Sam Ashbrook (Haverhill, MA), John Randall (J.R.) and Ben Wilson (Lexington), Bodie and Jaxon Woodrum (Nicholasville, KY); two granddaughters, Rachelle Ashbrook (Haverhill, MA) and Elizabeth Wilson (Lexington); three nieces Sandy (Johnny Mac) Palmer, Kathy Jo (Melvin) Jones, and Ann (Joe) Hutchinson all of Cynthiana; a special sister-in-law Carol (James) Vest (Georgetown, KY); several great nieces and nephews, and a host of other family and close friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Drake-Whaley-McCarty Funeral Home in Cynthiana, KY with Dr. Larry Bishop officiating on April 11 at 11:00 AM with interment following at the Battle Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-8 PM Thursday at the funeral home.
The family has asked that donations be made in his memory to the Cynthiana Christian Church Building Fund (P.O. Box 236, Cynthiana, KY 41031).
Active Pallbearers: Logan Louderbach, James Vest, Ralph Edward Wiglesworth, Johnny Mack Palmer,
Newton Crump, Mark Patrick and Jim Drake.
