Alethea Eulaine Gillespie Sturdevant, 89, of Cynthiana, wife of Robert Harry Sturdevant, passed away Friday, August 30, 2019 at Harrison Memorial Hospital.
Born August 5, 1930 in Tollesboro, Kentucky to the late Dave Simpson & Sarah Seybold Gillespie, Alethea graduated from the University of Kentucky School of Agriculture & Home Economics, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree, and received her Master’s Degree as a Registered Dietician from the University of Iowa. She was inducted into the Phi Upsilon Omicron Honor Society. Alethea had a long career in the fields of nutrition and home economics, having worked as a Registered Dietician for the University of Indiana Medical Center in Indianapolis and the Cafeteria Manager for the Hetzel Student Union Building at Penn State University. She instructed classes for the American Dietetic Association, and was a member of the organization for more than 50 years. Alethea spent several years traveling with Robert on his tours in the U.S. Air Force and served as a substitute teacher on the bases where they were stationed. In 1965, they settled in northern Illinois where they raised their family. They retired to Cynthiana in 1995.
Additional survivors include 3 children: David (Elisabeth) Sturdevant, of Walpole, Maine, Cheryl (Roger) Ellis, of Wales, Wisconsin, and Alison (Randall) Miller, of Keller, Texas; 7 grandchildren: Jonathan Sturdevant, Amy Williams, Daniel Sturdevant, Ryan Ellis, Andrew Ellis, Scott Ellis and Ashley Keller; and 9 great-grandchildren.
Also preceding her in death were 2 brothers, Julian Elmo & Stanley Otto Gillespie.
Services will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday, September 7, 2019 at the Indian Creek Christian Church, Cynthiana, Kentucky by Pastor Roger Ellis and Rev. Ernie Perry. Burial will follow at 3:00 P.M. in the Maysville Cemetery, Maysville, Kentucky.
Visitation will begin at 9:00 A.M. Saturday at the church.
